Navigational Instruments for the USS Constitution
Chip log, 28 second sandglass, and Traveerse board made for the 200th birthday of the USS Constitution. The Navy owns these now and they can be seen aboard the vessel. They were made form wood taken from the Constitution during her late 1990's rebuild
I was contacted by a former skipper of the USS Constitution and asked if I knew how they navigated back in her heyday. This was around 1996 and the vessel was being rebuilt for it’s 200th Birthday Sail.
I described how it was done and offered to make a set of basic navigational instrument sfor the ship. As she was being rebuilt, I said that if they could get some scraps taken OFF the vessel, I would make the instruments out of those pieces of wood. The Navy Yard graciously supplied me with excellent wood.

What a privilege to have a project become a piece of US Navy history! As a retired naval officer I can say with confidence that the officers and crew are thankful for your gracious offering. BZ! (In navy flag codes that means, WELL DONE!)
Wow, what an honor and privilege.
Thanks for sharing and Bravo, Zulu.
Can't top that for a worthwhile project. First rate.
