I wanted to make something quick and decorative for the house, and I wanted to practice cutting curves. This maple candle holder was the result and it could not have been more simple. A bandsaw and spokeshave for the curves, and a Forstner bit for the candle holes. The rest was sandpaper, shellac (Zinsser clear) and wax.
I’m pleased wtih the design although I have heard from various colleagues that it looks like a tie-down cleat from a boat, a yoke for very small oxen or the handle for a very large spokeshave. I don’t mind. I don’t know that I had anything specific in mind beyond nice restrained and harmonious curves, but I like to think that it looks a little like bit like a bridge.
Anyone else out there making candle holders? Respond here or post photos to our gallery. Thanks for looking, and have a great New Year!

"Here's hoping my wife likes it too"
What's not too like Steve. It's nice to see
a holder that's not the "usual" block or round
type of design. The first thing that came to
my mind was bridge, then boat cleat but most
of all was "oriental". Anyway, thanks for the
article and I'm already waiting for the next
one in the New Year.Hope you and the rest of
the woodworking community have a Happy New
Year too. :0)
Steve,
Your wife is crazy if she doesn't like your candleholder.
Possibly the best-known woodworker making candleholders was Rude Osolnik, one of the best-known woodturners of the 20th century. You can see some of his iconic work by following this link:

@David and Pitbully: Thanks very much for the comments and, I'm happy to report. the piece was a success when I brought it home. Candle-light dinner last night. Kids: "Is the power out again?"
That's a pretty cool design. I made a few candle stick holders for gifts about five years ago on my wood lathe. I forgot how a simple but practical gift idea it is.
That is a beautiful design Stephen. I made some last year and rubbed on a couple of coats of a poly/linseed/thinner mix and it wasn't enough to block colored candles from staining the woods. I liked the finish so I stated drilling for tea candles.
@jmotto and woodluc: Thanks to you both for the kind words. This was a fun project, and I like the idea of using something from the scrap bin, keeping it simple and creating something useful and decorative.
UN ELEGANTE CANDELABRO, GRACIAS X COMPARTIR TUS TRABAJOS.
