Using Blocks to Duplicate Hole Patterns
Here’s an exact and reproducible way to drill rows of evenly spaced holes. The technique uses a drill press and a fixture that combines indexing blocks, a fence and gauge blocks.
Cut the indexing blocks the same width as the distance between the rows of holes you want. Place a block between the fence and your work, align the drill bit with the first hole and then drill the holes in series, removing and adding the gauge blocks as you go. Be sure to blow away any sawdust, which would reduce the accuracy.
