Made You Look: Deck Out Your Drill Press
Carmonius Finsnickeri adds several brilliant features to his drill press.Ben Strano and I both appreciate finding brilliant jigs and setups. When he shared this with me, I knew I had to pay it forward. Carmonius Finsnickeri has decked out his drill-press table with so many smart features, and seems to anticipate all of the problems I’ve run into with workholding on the drill press. Utilizing a T-track system and table mounted C-clamps (typically used on welding tables), Carmonius is able to securely hold even oddly shaped pieces horizontally and vertically. He utilizes a Makita trim router dust-collection shroud attached to a mounting system to catch shavings and dust directly at the source.
One of the many brilliant features on this table is the addition of axial bearings where the knobs lock down the fence. (More on how those axial bearings work is in another YouTube video.) This cheap addition both applies more torque without effort, extending the life of your threads, and keeps things locked in place despite vibration. These are the little thoughtful details that excite me about the jig-making process. I hope they do for you too.
Reading through the comments, I found a similar product to the table-mounted C-clamps but more woodworking friendly: Milescraft offers a padded version that is already compatible with a T-track.

Love this article.
I must admit, over the years, I have seriously under-invested in my drill press.
This article has done at least two things for me: it has given me greater appreciation for my drill press and it has inspired me to go on another jig making binge, which promises lots of learning and satisfaction.
