hi,
I have just changed blades in my powermatic 8″ jointer and I am unable to get a straight joint for gluing. The ends of the boards are open a little and I need to get them to close.
I know this has been covered many times and there was a good jointer article in a previous issue of FWW.
Does anyone know how to search for issues on this site now?
Also what is your preference for setting the knives? I have used a straight edge and a dial indicator with some success. Are the magnetic jigs worthwhile?
thanks,
Stevo

Maybe the outfeed table is now low. that results in snipe. snipe will "open" the ends of the boards, as you put it.
To check the outfeed table: joint a board flat, approx a foot or so long. With the jointer set for a light cut, joint the board again and shut off the jointer after you've run the board about 4 inches onto the outfeed table. The board will either be floating above the table a bit (be sure to keep pressure on the infeed side of the board), or it will be flush. the other possibility (doubtful) is that the board hits the edge of the outfeed. if the board is floating above the outfeed table, that means, of course the outfeed is too low. that causes snipe. raise the table and retest, but make sure you start with a FLAT board. use a jointer plane, or multiple light passes so that the test board is FLAT, before jointing the first 4 inches and shutting the jointer off and checking the distance (if any) to the table. raise the outfeed table to take up any gap.

Jigs that reference the cutter head are great for setting the knives all the same height, but they do not reference the outfeed table.
I set my outfeed table by initially raising it slightly high. Then, using a board with a known flat edge, I place the board on the outtfeed table and turn on the jointer. I slide the board over the cutterhead. If I do not hear the blade contacting the board, I lower the table slightly and repeat this procedure until I hear the blades just contact the board without a perceptible cut being made. This works for me.
