I’ve found the scraper in the veritas plane a bit of a pain, will using a bevel up blade in it like this cause any problems with the lapped face? It does a nice job.

Scraper planes are enormously finicky. To finicky for me.
If that blade works, go for it.
If the bevel is facing forwards it is fine. I would not want to put the wear on the flattened back of the plane iron to avoid extensive grinding if the iron goes back in a bench plane. Not sure how it will work that way.
I have Stanley that yours is moeled on. It took time to learn how to set it up, but it was time well spent.
