Quartersawn and animated
This video illustrates the work that goes into turning a log into perfectly quartersawn lumber.Even though it’s a staple of many furniture makers’ lumber stash, the price of quartersawn lumber often feels unjustified. A while back, I found this video from Frank Miller Lumber that perfectly demonstrates the added work that goes into milling up quartersawn stock, and made it easier to stomach the asking price last time I was at the lumberyard. I thought it was worth sharing.
If you’re interested in what the process actually looks like at the mill, check out the following video at the 1:49 mark.

Super cool. Lots of aha moments in these few minutes. Thank you!
Interesting but what about rift-sawn?
Woodworkers (and their magazines) often talk about "quarter-sawn oak" as that which gives planks showing the medullary rays, a desirable feature of much Arts & Crafts styles using oak as their mainstay timber. But in fact, and as the video shows, not all quarter sawn planks have the growth rings exactly perpendicular to the faces of the planks.
Those quarter-sawn planks that don't have the growth rings exactly perpendicular to the faces of the plank rarely show the medullary rays.
However, if the log is rift-sawn, every plank does have the rings perpendicular to the plank faces. All of them should show medullary rays. In addition, plain-sawn logs do have a portion that are cut with the growth rings perpendicular to the plank faces and showing medullary rays, although most of the plain-sawn planks from the log are not of this kind

The problem with rift sawing is the waste. But the "waste can in fact be turned into usable parts albeit they'll be thin and narrow in section.

In all events, when buying "quarter-sawn" oak via the web, or otherwise without seeing it, make sure the seller understands you only want those planks showing medullary rays, not the others, if that's your objective in buying "quarter-sawn".
