Slippery Tape has a Host of Uses
UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) polyethelyene tape is a handy addition to the shop. It is sold at woodworking retailers under the brand names Slick Tape, Slick Strips, and others, and it’s available in various widths from 1⁄2 in. to 3 in. I use it to reduce friction on tools, jigs, and fixtures.
For example, when tuning up my jointer recently, I discovered that the underside of the fence was rubbing against the bed. I placed a small strip of UHMW tape where the fence touches down, and now it glides effortlessly forward and back. I’ve also had great results using it under a tenoning jig and a crosscut sled.
