Routing Fingernail Edges
Your roundover router bits can do double duty cutting fingernail-shaped edges if you simply change the angle at which the work moves into the bit. I use the bits in a router table with an auxiliary fence that presents the stock to the bit at a 45¡ angle as illustrated. A 1/2-in. bit will mold the shape on 5/8-in.-thick stock, and a 3/4-in. bit will handle l-in.-thick stock. Notice that the lip on the fence acts as a track for the work and must have a gap in it so the bit can contact the work. For occasional use, this method beats buying the expensive specialty bit.
