Woodworker: Michael Mode
Mode’s 18th-century French-style chess set is made from cherry and ebony. In order to weigh down each piece, melted solder was added into the screw-chuck hole in the bottom, then covered with felt. All pieces were turned on a lathe and finished with several coats of tung oil.
