Is there a common allowance used in determining the inside dimensions for a bed frame? In other words, for a 39 x 75 twin, what do you use for the inside dimension? I realize measuring the mattress is ideal, but it’s also not a good idea to make a bed to fit an undersized mattress. I’ve read or heard anything from 1 1/2 inches all around to nothing, because mattresses are always, if anything, smaller than the standard dimensions. What do you do? Thanks.

I am not sure, the last bed I made has approximately 1 3/4" clear at the perimeter. It works ok. All the sheets and blankets tuck into that space. The slats are strong enough and plenty of them that they have not sagged at all for having the edges of the matress be shy of the rails. I think I could have cut it back to 1" at the perimeter and still be ok.
I just ordered two queen mattress sets from a local custom maker. He suggested that there be a 1" clearance on all four sides, so the inside dimensions of the bed frame would be two inches longer than the mattress size. For the queen, that works out to be inside dimensions of 62" x 82" to fit a 60" x 80" mattress. I don't know about undersized mattresses, but I have built a bed frame before for one of his mattresses per his suggestion and it turned out very well. At any rate, it might not be a good idea to work off of an undersized mattress because if in the future you replace it with something closer to the standard size, you may end up with too tight of a fit.
