Scaring myself – bought another router!!
My name is Robbie and I am a tool-a-holic.
I did it again today … and haven’t quite mentioned it yet to the budget director. There’s gonna “be some splainin to do”
Last year, a friend laughed at my 20+ year old B&D router (the one that looks like the Dewalt 610). The bearings were going and so I went out and bought a new Bosch 1617 kit for handheld use. It was a smart purchase, (even though I already owned a DW625 that I didn’t care for all that much and used even less).
I had planned on putting that 4 year old DW625 into a NYW router table I am building, where at least it would get a decent workout. Bought the Woodpecker plungelift and things seemed “honky dorry” (spelling?) — until I mounted the router in the base. The set-up is such that you really cannot get sufficient clearance for a larger diameter bit and still get adequate “purchase” within the collet. It is just the design of the 625 – collet extension is not long enough once it is in a plate.
So I did it. I exchanged the Plunge Lift for the PRL (an additional $120) and ordered a PC 7518 (at least there was a $50 rebate – my net cost $250). Now I am not a professional woodworker and if truth were known, I have precious time to really invest in it as a hobby (albeit a passionate one). I justify it by saying, when I get this tool and build the table, I will be much more productive in the shop.
Sound familiar to anyone? Now, what I really need is an 8″ jointer, then I will really be much more productive… Uh oh. Here we go again.

DO NOT BE AFRAID till you get over 12 routers. It's the 13th one that's the problem because you have to buy two to get by #13...

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Hey IMERC, what does your username mean? IMERC means something specific to do with treatment standards for hazardous wastes containing mercury.

Google returns a hit or two!! I'm familiar with the mercury stuff. That you in the Forestry Forum?

Robbie.. I'm in the same boat. Bought a Makita plunge.. rationalized I needed a fixed base and bought a Craftsman/table combo.. then saw a Bosch laminate trimmer on sale and couldn't resist.. then, most recently, bought the Bosch combo.
And I don't do any routing to speak of.
But I plan to. (?)
The PRL and the PC is a nice combo you'll like having a dedicated tool in the router table.
Robbie,
It must have been something in the air. Bought the PC 892 today.
Lost an old 3hp router I got from my father-in-law in the flood in the basement shop last april and absolutely positively needed something besides the PC 690 and the two trim routers.
Have fun

.............. definitely something in the air, lol. Picked up a PC Model 100 Heritage Edition. Ancient design (first came out in 1957 I think) but still my favorite router out of 3 (310 and 690 kit). It looks pretty enough if it ever conks out, I'll just put it on the mantel. Think IMERC is right ........... can't have too many routers.
It is best to just let them lay around the shop for a while and get a little dusty, then the budget director does not take as much notice. She was quite surprised to see ten routers on that shelf not long ago…….
Wow: I only ordered it yesterday and it arrived today. The Budget Director made no mention of the red and white box on the porch, so I am clear.
This sucker is big. Was surprised that the 7518 did not come with a 1/4" collet. What's up with that? Just waiting on the Woodpecker PRL to arrive at Woodcraft.

Any profile you need a big router for comes with a 1/2" shank. :o) You can get 1/4" adapter for it, but if you're going to be running a multi-router shop, there's really not much point.
Dear Robbie,
Yes, you are a sick person, and you are not alone. For the record it's "Hunky Dory" as in Hungarian Boat. The old slang and unpolitically correct term for Hugarians was "Hunky". A "Dory" is a small, open New England boat usually rowed, sometimes sailed or now-a-days powered. There, let Regis try to beat you on that one now! An 8" jointer is an excellent investment. I always find that "Her Majesty" is more receptive to tool purchaces, when I approach it from a safety standpoint. A lot of people like the Grizzley although I think that I would make mine a "Bridgewood":

Good Luck ,

OK - This worked out pretty well. Suggested to Dawn (Her Majesty, The Major, Funds Administrator, Best Thing Ever Happened to Me, etc.) on Saturday. She is supportive of the DJ-20 purchase. Understanding is that it means a new set of living room coffee and end tables. Yes... What a woman. I am a lucky man.
I was real reluctant to pitch the Craftsman router Dad had given me.You could shake it and hear the bearings rattle. The last straw came when I noticed the profile changing on a moulding I was doing. Low and behold, the bit was rising out of that worn old collet- about to go free flight through my corpus delecti.
I pitched it. Hope no one pulled it out of the trash.

Can't resist,
Wife asks me what I want for my birthday, (end of this month). Told her I already bought it. What. Replaced the router I lost in the flood last April. You sure that's what you want. Yup, I says.
Should be delivered this week
