I’d like to tighten the tote if my grandfather’s wood-bodied 22” hand plane, but it’s stumped me. The tote sits in an inch-or-so-deep mortise, and the best I can determine it’s held in with a nail. I’ve found schematics of the parts, but no detail as to fasteners. Guidance invited and appreciated.

If it were me, I wouldn't try to pull the tote out. I would see if I could wedge and glue the loose end(s) and then flush saw and chisel. I'm afraid of breaking the thin part of the tote.
Thanks for the reply. Thinking more about it, I’ve concluded that the tote isn’t THAT loose. And I can live with it as is. But, curiosity now has the best of me and I would like to know how the tote gets married to the body. I expected to find a slotted screw but see what looks to be a nail head. Thanks again!
Most often, it was stuck in a mortise in the body, with a peg drilled through the side.
