I designed this computer desk for my son. Since he is an avid gamer, my design has a wing on the right side for a large mouse pad. The problem is, this makes the desk top maximum width a little over 30″, too wide to fit through the standard house interior door. It’s possible the desk could be rotated to fit in a doorway, but the only way to find out is to build the desk and try. If it won’t fit, that will be a lot of work for nothing. I could make it hinge up, but don’t really want visible hinges. I thought of removing the top to move it, but I’m not sure the framework would hold up to being carried around, especially up stairs. Any suggestions on how to build this top?

Two thoughts come to mind.
A: Hinge the extension from the bottom using long hinges with the barrel offset under the top. That way, when it is folded down, the extension will be back underneath the top. You could use a slide out rail, typical of drop leaf tables to support the extension when it is in the up position.
2: Perhaps you could revise the undercarriage design to gain some additional strength and stiffness. Relying on just the top for that is probably not the best idea. If the base isn't stiff enough to withstand being carried without the top, it's likely the base will be wobbly even with the top installed.
