Treetalk,
I bought the 1617VSpk a few years ago and love it. That being said, however, I'm still Jonesing to add the D-handle version to my collection; my preference would have been to obtain a pair that comprised the D-handle base and the plunge base, but they aren't sold like that.
If you have a chance, try to operate several different brands and configurations - there are some folks with a clear preference for the tough and simple Porter Cable 690, and some (like me) who prefer the finesse afforded by the Bosch; it's hard to identify your preferences without a hands-on experience.
They're both very good routers - so hang on, enjoy the ride, and remember: you can never have too many routers!

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
I've got three 1617EVS routers and wouldn't trade them for anything. I don't have the D-handle yet, but wish I did!

I have the 1617evs which I use in a router table, very easy to adjust in table. I did have to replace the switch within a year, cost around $10.00 if I remember, and fairly easy to replace. Other than the switch, no problems. I especially like the variable speed.

I have two 1617vs and like Bill I wouldn't trade them for anything either. They are great machines. The only complaint that I would have is that I prefer the template guide system on the porter cable. It seems to be more rigid. The guide system on the Bosch has just a little play that is quite annoying. That said I still love them.
Hope this helps.

If you prefer the PC guide system, then do what I did. Get a clear base with a 1 3/16 hole from the routerman Pat Warner and some PC guides from Lee Valley.
"The guide system on the Bosch has just a little play " Ahhhhhh, very interesting. I just ventured into template routing with my PC690, using the brass bushings. In the process, discovered that the Bosch router had those "tool-less" bushings. So, sounds like there is a downside?
The brass bushings can certainly be locked in there, but I have to use a wrench or plier if I really want to get it tight -- hands aren't strong enough.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Dear Robby,There is a Bosch-made, inexpensive adapter that allows one to use the P. C. bushings. It costs less than $10.00Good luck.-mbl-
Thanks I will check it out.

i have a 1617ev. love it. very easy to work with. probably going to buy a second one so i don't have to take it out of table when i need a hand held one.

I don't know if you can do this with the Bosch, but with my Porter Cable, I bought an extra base. The motor slips out of the router table, and into the extra base. Less expensive.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
I woud go with forestgirls suggestion and buy a new base. Definetly cheaper. But having two routers is pretty nice too.
