Made You Look: Snowflake no 8
Daniel Clay carves a small snowflake, but his work is much larger. At the beginning of the COVID pandemic, I lost access to a communal shop space and had much more time on my hands. Chip carving appealed to me because it could be done in an apartment with minimal tools. Also, it seemed like a therapeutic task during a very chaotic time. I spent a lot more time researching than executing, which I did still find therapeutic, and I can think of no better chip carver than Daniel Clay. The video illustrates a small carving, but the size of his work varies from small bud vases to large chests.
The beauty of practicing and mastering a technique on small pieces does not limit you to just that, as Daniel proves with this intricately carved headboard he recently completed.
He teaches the foundations of chip carving in his book “Chip Carving: Techniques For Carving Beautiful Patterns By Hand”, as well as courses online and throughout the country. Daniel’s work can be found at danielclaywoodworking.com and @danielclay

Very nice carving, however, I would be afraid of getting one carved 90% and screw up on the next cut!
I'll draw my snowflakes and cut them on my CNC. That way I can get the variety and make many copies in a short time.
