Cabinetry Contest Winners Announced

The votes are in, and it’s time to announce the two winners for Fine Woodworking’s recent Creative Cabinetry gallery contest.

Grand Prize

Our grand prize goes to FineWoodworking.com user trout123. Essentially a Shaker-style sewing desk, trout123’s piece was specially crafted to house an assortment of fly-tying materials. Trout123 will be taking home a Kreg K5 Pocket Hole Jig and a copy of Mark Edmundson’s Pocket Hole Joinery Book.

Second Prize

Our second prize goes to FineWoodworking.com user bmd. This Sculptural 4-Drawer Cabinet‘s unique design is way off the beaten path. Bmd will be taking home a copy of Mark Edmundson’s Pocket Hole Joinery Book and a Fine Woodworking DVD Archive.

	Grand Prize Shaker-Style Sewing Desk No needle and thread for this little sewing table. Instead, FineWoodworking.com member trout123 reproduced a Shaker classic to serve as a fly-tying station. Details include 12 drawers, a cubby in the upper gallery, and a pull-out work surface.
	Second Prize Sculptural 4-Drawer Cabinet Built of maple, red oak, and rosewood, this sculptural piece serves as FineWoodworking.com member bmd’s refined interpretation of a barn structure, showing the “beauty and strength of wood in a dynamic design.” Joinery details include pinned bridle joints, wedged mortise-and-tenons, and sliding dovetails.

All the entries are deserving of my appreciation for the effort, hours and anguish that are required to create a piece that the builder can be proud of. Keeping in mind that the contest was titled "Creative Cabinet," I have to vote for the whiskey cabinet. It has several elements that required the designer/builder to exhibit his talents and skill at both executing the process of constructing and blending the different pieces into an attractive and functional cabinet.
This is not a piece I would place in my home. I simply am attracted to the look of the contrasting shapes and colors and I am drawn to the way the pieces are used together. It was the most "Creative" of the entries and I raise my glass to the builder!
