Practical Furniture Design
The Taunton Press, 2009.
$24.95; 272 pp.
Here’s a collection of articles from past issues of Fine Woodworking magazine about designing furniture. Practical Furniture Design includes articles about drafting, scaling furniture from photos, different design styles, and understanding wood movement. The book also includes sections on tables, casework and cabinets, chairs, and beds. The subtitle of the book says it all: “From Drawing Board to Smart Construction” – this is a great collection of articles to help with your furniture designing.

This has captured my interest. I seem to have already started a small Taunton Press library as it is. Great books.
I want. I want!
It's a good book; I've borrowed it from my library. I would love to win it.

Sounds cool. Count me in please.
I would like a chance as well, please.
For the love of all things wooden I need this book. My designs are firmly impractical. And for that matter "design" would imply forethought and so doesn't even apply. Help me transition from impractical furniture improvisation to practical furniture design.
Does saying "please" increase my chances?
help a beginner become more efficient and add to the building of my library of books.
PLEASE!!
I could use this book to expnd my woodworking knowledge.
Woodworking: I spend almost as much time reading about it as doing it. Help feed my habit!

Me too!
Practical Furniture Design (from drawing board to smart construction)
This book is appears not about the mechanics and woodworking skills of furniture making but more about aesthetics and techniques of quality design. Training the eye to pick up on detail from many sources and noting these ideas, most likely in a design sketchbook.
“Designing a piece of furniture should be fun, not intimidating” is a great opening to what I envisage, a can’t-put-it-down type of book. At the very least, essential it is another book for your essential reading list.
The book is divided into 8 sections; the first 4 sections dealing with the concepts of Design, Making plans and models (or not), right Style and Working with wood. The last sections focus specifically on types of furniture; being Tables, Cabinets, Chairs and a final section on Special purpose furniture.
This book is definitely on my ESSENTIAL reading list.
I NEVER win anything. Change my luck!

I need all the help I can get!
I've been working wood for over 30 years and have worked in many shops from mill work to antique reproduction. My first power tool was a lathe and my first piece of furniture was a 1/6th scale pencil post bed for my nieces b-day. She was 7, I was 14. I copied a design from one of my dads old furniture books. I'm now too disabled to do most of the woodworking I love but I've planted a "wood bug" in my nephews head. This will make a fantastic gift to him and encourage his own imagination through the talents of others. Cheers to all that enter and good luck!
Count me in. I could definitely use help!
I've jjst started my venture into woodworking. Looking into building Frank Lloyd. Wright furniture replicas. Does anyone know if there are books with plans of his works? stephan
Another hat in the ring..
Looks good! I could always use some practical knowledge.
I'd love this book: I want to stop copying other peoples work and start designing my own.
Always looking to learn more
Sounds like a book that would help avoid crucial mistakes.
I'm ready to start a new furniture project. You can make only so many small boxes before it's time to build something with heft.
This would definitely help improve my skills.
I am a welder by trade and always like new things, woodworking is SO much different that working with metal, but think the joints that are involved are very cool and think a design book would be helpful to get my brain to see wood design instead of metal working...
I'm always interested in design books - it's the hardest part of this craft! Thanks for offering this.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Looks good - count me in.
I like the word practical, and what's that he's doing on the cover? Doesn't he do Sketch Up?
I am in. Pick me! Pick me!
Count me in - I'm always interested in a good read!
Awesome. I could always use a good book but best of luck to whoever gets it.
Always open to free woodworking stuff.
Looks like a great book--I'd love to win!
Another excellent woodworking tome. Sign me up for the drawing!
Sure wished you guys would do an article on the real world (practical) use of the "the Golden Proportion Gauge(1:1.6816)". I notice that non of the articles about designing furniture have ever given any practical advice about the use of the "Fibonacci gauge". While some articles have mentioned the gauge non have offered any practical advice of how to employ it.
Much needed. Please send this book my way. Thanks!
I have picked this book up at least a half dozen times in the store but never bought it as something always distracted me and I put it back. I think the Fine Woodworking Gods knew it should be mine but steered me to wait until this draw. Who am I to argue with Gods? That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Seriously, I would love to have this book in my collection.
