I had to include this project. This is a wing I helped build with Michael DeSanti. The airplane people didn’t realize how beautiful a 40 foot varnished baltic birch wing really was. The wing is for a replica Fokker DVIII airplane and I’ve included some more pictures with it. The plywood is 1/16 aircraft grade. The ribs are plywood and steam bent centimeter square sitka spruce slats and the spars are just plywood boxes with cross pieces every so often. Fokker had 32 men stand on one of these wings to demonstrate it’s strength.

Blackwing Pencils
If you've listened to Shop Talk Live, you've heard them talk more about these pencils than you could possibly imagine.
Knife changes on this planer were easy enough, except that you need an Allen wrench to open the dust cover and gain access to the knives, and it’s not the same size as the wrench used to loosen the screws that secure the knives. The 2-1/2-in.-dia. dust port can be reversed for use on either side of the machine. Two material rollers on top of the machine aid with transferring stock from the outfeed side back to the infeed side. Finally, there is no gauge that indicates how much material you’re about to remove, a convenience that three other planers also lack.
This machine joints a very good surface, with a fence that is flat and smooth-moving. The fence is easy to set to 90°, and it stayed that way. The 90° stop was also easy to set and reliable. The start and stop buttons can be installed above or below the infeed table.
Spacing: Variable Stock width (max.): 18 in. Stock thickness: 1/4 in. to 13/16 in. for through-dovetails (pins board can be 1 in.); 1/4 in. to 13/16 in. for half-blinds Half-blind depth: 7/32 in. to 3/4 in.
