Golden Temple Of The Ivory Moon
comments (2) February 26th, 2009 in Reader's Gallery
The jewelry box "Golden Temple of the Ivory Moon" is 24" high x 17" x 17." Materials are various hardwoods including padauk, rosewood & ebony, bone, antique ivory, jade, brass & gold leaf. The rotating central section of the chest contains 12 triangular drawers, 3 mini-closets with bone knobs inside for necklaces and each is labeled with the name of a jewel. The locked dome opens (see detail) to reveal a storage box and a small sculptural orrery inside. The "man in the moon" on the weather vane is saying "Jewels are the stars of the earth." With the exception of the hinges, all parts are hand-made. This piece may be considered as either a sculptural box or a functional sculpture---it is what it is.
