Contemporary Tansu Mizuya (Kitchen Cabinet) – Repurposed
This is a project I’ve wanted to do for some time. I’m fascinated with tansu furniture, and I specialize in designing & building contemporary versions of many tansu pieces.
This mizuya (a kitchen cabinet repurposed as a combination entertainment center and storage unit for our bedroom) is made from African mahogany and is actually three stacked sections.
As you can see in the photo with the sliding doors removed it has a whopping 20 large drawers — all equipped with Blum “soft-close” glides. The hardware (drawer pulls and recessed sliding door pulls) come from Hida Tool. The piece is finished with Minwax red mahogany stain and Sherwin-Williams moisture-resistant lacquer. This project took me more than four months to build as the joinery is quite complex.
I hope you like it.

Very nicely done. I alsoam fond of this form (check out my profile) and appreciate the elegance,
Tom,
I'm building a modern home. In the entry I intended on incorporating a tansu type cabinet under the stairs and including a small closet. I'm still building and haven't done much design work yet, but I'd love to work through some of the details with you as you've spent a lot of time with the form. It will be modern; however, I want the tansu form visible. Really like your work. Nicely designed. [email protected]
