Mullet High-Speed Cyclone Dust Collector
Mullet Tools has devised a slick single-piece cyclone/collection bin that hooks directly to a vacuum, allowing the cyclone to follow along like an obedient puppy. The two units can be quickly separated for cleaning. The Mullet cyclone bin is translucent, which makes it possible to see the sawdust level at a glance. And its 5-in. clean-out opening with a clear polycarbonate hatch makes emptying the bin quick and easy.
One of only two machines with a cutterhead perfectly parallel to its beds, the DeWalt 734 is a very good planer. Knife changes overall were straightforward, but access is difficult because you must remove a Phillips-head screw from under the dust shroud—not an easy task. The dust port on the back of the machine has a 2-1/2-in.-dia. opening but can be hooked up to a 4-in.-dia. hose. Connected to a dust collector, it did an excellent job gathering chips. And because the port exits to the left of the machine, the hose is never in the way of exiting boards. The top of the machine is flat, making it a good place to stack boards between passes.
Seemingly identical to the Shop Fox W1844, the Grizzly G0785 collected a few less chips in our test—but was still roughly average among the five small models. Emptying was easy, thanks to a bag that stays in place on the canister while you operate the band clamp, which also works well. Both units hang well on their brackets.
