Arts and Crafts-style Mantel
Woodworker: Mario Rodriguez
This mantel was designed to revive an old fireplace with a raised hearth. The use of straight-grained oak draws attention to the ArtsĀ and Crafts design. Small details, such as the repeated cornice molding, tie the hearth and overmantel together visually. The shelf is made from plywood to lessen the weight. The mantel’s aged look was achieved with the use of glazing gel, followed by either shellac or wax.
