    Shopmade 12″ Disk Sander

Author Headshot By Bricofleur - May 19, 2011
    Article Image

My disk sander is completed and ready to use. That’s a great tool. All I needed was scraps, a 1/4 HP electric motor, a pulley, an electrical box, a switch and an electric cord (plus skills and imagination, of course!).

Respecting the direction of the rotation (here counter-clockwise) is important at a disk sander, reason why I used a permanent marker to indicate where the disk spins upwards, part that must not be used.

Make your own, you certainly won’t regret. More photos and all construction details are available on my blog.

    Best,

    Serge

How did you make that motor mount?

Very cool idea, but I'm wondering about the accuracy. They don't make them out of cast iron for looks. I may be paranoid though.

I am impressed-homegrown ingenuity. I happen to have a 1/3 hp motor laying around that would work just fine. Thanks.

      Thank you for your comments.

@timbit2006: I made mine as accurate as possible and I'm very satisfied. I believe they make them out of cast iron so anyone out there could jump or climb on them!

@Jake319: I purchased the motor mount from Lee Valley, item #06K12.01

@EdsShop: 1/3 hp motor will be great. Mine is 1/4 hp.

      Best,

      Serge

      Nice Job Bric,

Back in the earkt 80's I build a sander to attach to the tailstock of my wood lathe. Works great. The nice thing about it is I can utilize the motor ont he lathe whitch doesn't get used as much as my other tools. Now that I'm retired I'm planning to get more involved with woodworking. I also hope to post this project soon on this site.

Serge, It looks as thou you are using a light dimmer switch in one of your photos.
Is that a special type of motor that you are using so that you can vary the speed or am i missing something?
