I scanned the following photo from the dust jacket of The Workbench, by Lon Schleining. As you can see, there are two Veritas hold downs, and two other things that appear to be some sort of clamp or spreader. Does anyone have any idea what they are?

It looks like the hardware for a wooden jaw clamp. Tom
I thought about that, but they're not quite right. In addition to the threaded rod, there is a smooth rod, and with a stop ring attached to the shaft just below the handle, it looks like rotating the handle causes the lower block to travel up/down the shaft, decreasing/increasing the distance between the two blocks.

Looks like a type of holdfast to me.

I'm not talking about the holdfasts (I mentioned them in my original post), I'm talking about the two other things, with threaded rods and wooden handles.

Steve,
They almost look like some kind of adjustable stop thang. Looks like threaded allen screws but their being on the threaded rod kinda throughs me a bit. I was almost gonna say innards for a hand screw.........

They are for clamping miters. You drill a hole on each side of the joint that is the same size as a bushing that threads into the bottom of the clamp. Place the bushing in the hole and clamp away. Kinda a crude way of doing it, but it works.
Tom
Interesting. With that information, I was able to find something similar:
http://www.amazon.com/Gross-Stabil-GSP-SET-Mitre/dp/B00081YRIM%3FSubscriptionId%3D02RPFG92XDY7AWDKJVR2%26tag%3Dhealth4fitnes-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00081YRIM
With this setup, you use two ordinary F-style clamps to clamp the pads of the miter clamp to the two pieces, one on each side of the joint, then tighten the screw on the miter clamp to close the joint. No holes required.

Miter clamp...you drill holes to pull the parts together. Sort of like the Stabil ones but different manufacturer.
Steve,
mrfu and RickL beat me to the punch. They are indeed for clamping miters - hole is drilled into the mating pieces (on the back) and the pins locate in the holes and pull the joint together when tightened.

Excuse me, Gentlemen! They can also be used for pulling miters apart!

Jeff,
There are many pikshers, in the National Gallery and elsewhere, that need pulling apart so as they will fit better on the bonfire. Perhaps I will obtain one or three of them reversing clampets......
