Is the furniture piece possibly imported? This is a wild guess, and I'm not good at this, but possibly rubber wood? You see it a lot in the furniture they sell at Hobby Lobby, Pier 1, and other places with imported goods from India, Indonesia, etc.
I was thinking rubberwood. It's not ash. I'm pretty confident it's not a North American wood.

It can be very hard to tell sometimes because factories will use common wood and use finishing techniques to cover and change the wood character.
