i would like to refinish a piece with milk paint. it already has a factory urethane finish. do you think simply sanding it first with 120 grit will make it ready to absorb the milk paint?

If it's a factory finish, it's probably a catalyzed coating ( two part) not urethane.
Sand it well,(be sure to wear a mask) clean all the dust. I would also use a maroon scotch pad after sanding to further rub down the surface. Then wash it down with some dish soap and water. Dry it well.
The powder type milk paint has pretty good "bite" on a surface. however if you can test a spot first, do so.
As long as you get the first coat on successfully, you can easily do more over the top.
I would lay the first coat on with a minimum of brushing too.
The key is to test an area first.
Let me know how you do.
