I have been trying to get my photos into the Built-in Contest page and the site will not accept them.
The photos are continually rejected with the notice that they are too large and must be less than 4 MB in size.
All of the photos are only 2.6 MB to 3.2 MB in size.
I have tried Safari and FireFox to no avail.
Any advice? I have some cool projects to post in the contest.

There have been a couple of past threads dealing with this issue which may be of help to you, Todd. Bottom line is that you'll need to learn enough about image editing (and, get some software) to reduce the size (pixel count and file size) of your photos to fall within the site restrictions.
I have standard jpg's and they are well under the 4MB limit. Is there something that I am missing?Appreciate the feedback.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

2MB is still oversize for what you need.
You probably have a camera with a large megapixel count and the photos are actually larger than the screen but are being resized when you view them.
If they are straight out of the camera they probably have a lot of extra information embedded.
You need to load them into an image viewer, resize them and save again. Your size will drop to under 150KB.
My camera is about 4 years old and has a 7 MP rating on the highest setting. I have only been using the "standard" setting.I will give the resizing a try. Thanks.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

To fill the screen at 800 x 600 resolution needs 480000 pixels. Call it 0.5MPs. So your pics are 14 times larger than necessary!I don't know the size limits for posting to the gallery. (I'll find out if I ever produce something worthy of joining those masterpieces) but I doubt they would be much larger than this.If you're running Windows and are new to graphics editing I suggest Irfanview(free). If you want to play with the big boys then nothing beats the GIMP (free and Open Source) but the learning curve is 1 degree short of being a vertical wall.
I am on a Mac.I just resized the pictures to about 1 MB and I still get the message that they are too large. That was before reading your last post.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

There have been some strange things going on over the last week or so, with attachments to messages in the forum here. I wouldn't be surprised if what you're seeing is a symptom of the same underlying problem.-Steve
I am trying to resize them further.What sort of problems?Hacking problems?Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

I got the pix down to 180kb and I still get the message that they are too large.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Depending on what the application you are using is doing, Todd, "resizing" may be only increasing the amount of image compression, rather than changing the pixel dimensions.
I just got one to take!I am going to finish trying this.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

BTW, nice website, Todd. Nice balance of the personal and professional.

No, software-acting-funny problems. People try to attach photos to their messages, and are told that they've exceeded their quota, except that, as far as anyone knows, there is no quota, and even if there was one the numbers don't seem to add up (I've attached about 1.6 MB of photos all told, and have used up only 11 kB of my quota, for example). And, on top of all of that, the web hosting provider, Mzinga, doesn't appear to be answering any questions about the problems.-Steve
They all seem to be accepted at this point.I am going to finish my entry.Keep an eye on the built-in entries!Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

I am having the same problem trying to post my pictures on the toolbox contest.
how did you "fix" your files. Mine seem to be below the size limits?
thanks, Chris
Snapperhead,I am running on a Mac so my solution may be different than yours but I will share.I opened the photo and took a screen capture of it and that dropped some file size. Then I went to "File" and "Save As" then "JPEG" and I had a sliding scale for how detailed I wanted the file. I could save at 20 mgb clear up to 150 mgb for the given image. This was far less than the 2.5gb to almost 4gb that the image was originally at. For no larger than the image is in the site, this worked fine.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Ralph, that's for our attachments here at Knots. The contest is a separate entity.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
todd,
don't know a flippin' thing about resizing, pixels etc. your work is stunningly beautiful. hope your business is doing as well as it deserves. those shaker benches are particularly eye-catching to me.
eef
Eef - Thanks. Ironically, I am making another Shaker style bench for some clients in NY state right now. They are my most popular item.I just got my closet project posted now too. Thanks again for all of the help guys. All of the techno chit-chat got my thinking going in the right direction to get it figure out.I appreciate it-Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Todd, I'll send an email to Gina, see if she'll come by tomorrow and help. Don't get toooooo confused about the problems with Knots attachments, as that shouldn't have anything to do with what you're encountering in a different part of FWW.com
I had not attempted to post any photos at Knots, only the Built-in Contest.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Hi Todd,
Sorry to hear about your trouble.
I'd give it a try once again today... I uploaded some photos yesterday, and it worked fine for me, but a colleague reported similar problems.
If you're still having trouble, send your pix to [email protected] and we can try to upload them for you. Make sure to include your member name in the email.
I can't guarantee that we'll get them up (and I don't want a deluge of emails like this!)--because producing content takes priority over this tech support stuff. But I do want to try to help out in a pinch.
I understand that this system is frustrating, hopefully we'll be moving to a more robust platform in the coming months.

I was able to get my pix into the Built-in Contest yesterday. I am glad to hear that you are going to a better platform. While I appreciate the FWW site on one hand, on the other I have not found it to be the most user-friendly.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

But will it work with my Tandy T1000? It's got a bad fuel pump.
You might need to try a TRS80.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Hi Todd, I looked at your site nice, work you have there.
Do you work alone?
That shaker hall bench, what would you ask for a piece like that?
only ask because I find pricing work is harder that making it!!
I run Mac also.
Shoemaker - I am making a bench for some clients in NY right now. Going rate is $1200 plus shipping.I am working on this bench and another outside project. As the weather has been off and on for me, I am bouncing between this bench in the shop and my exterior project. I still do remodel besides the shop projects. Here is a link to my Flickr album for the project: http://www.flickr.com/photos/toddclippinger/sets/72157618830672749/Since I am in Montana and they are in New York, this has allowed the clients to follow the progress. They really enjoy watching things come together.I have some short video segments posted in the album too.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

I almost forgot - Yes, I work alone. If I need a hand I have other contractors that I hire for the time necessary or my wife sometimes helps me load and move things in the shop.Todd A. Clippinger~American Craftsman

Todd, I really like your use of photos and videos on your site and on the flickr site—great marketing and just enough of a personal touch to invite clients in without seeming too cloying or hokey. It must take you as long to do the photos and edit the videos as it does to build the pieces! Who takes the photos?Norman
I take my own photos with the multiple shot self-timer while I work. When I go in the office it is pretty easy to go through and edit them.Taking progress photos is quite easy after you start doing it. You will understand exactly what you want photos of and what angles and exposure settings work best in your shop.Video is another story at this point. It takes me an hour to edit the video down and get a 90 second video posted. I am just starting out with the video.I have done a couple of other videos:http://blip.tv/file/1620889/
