A friend recently saw a room in a house done comepletely in charred white oak. and he would now like a mantle done in the same way. The home owners actually flew in two guys from sweden to do the room so I figure there must be more to it than blasting at it with the cactus burner on my propane tank. Any suggestions before I set the shop on fire?

It's possible they used roasted/carmelized lumber. It's done in a vacuum kiln at high temperature and results in a chocolate color that is completely through the wood. Apparently very stable, exotic looking and may be more resistent to decay.
