Does anyone remember the sweet little taperleg table in FWW Feb2004 edition (168) by Garret Hack? I am assuming that the timbers are walnut and maple – does anyone think they are different?
I think that something like this would make a really nice present but from a design perspective (and no criticism of the master intended) am I alone in thinking that the apron is a bit too wide or does it have a function that reducing it by maybe an inch would cause a prob?

If you look at the picture on p. 64, you see there's not much wood left after the mortises are cut. Almost all the strength in that joint is from glue on the outside tenon cheeks. Garrett Hack has 4" aprons including a 1/4" cockbead strip that adds no strength. If you go to a 3" total width with the same design you lose 27% of the joint strength. If you go to 3.75" with an integral cock bead you lose no strength. A 3.5" apron with an integral cock bead gives you a visual decrease of 12.5% but a strength loss of only 6.7%.
My only quarrel with the design is that the sharp corners are about eye height for a charging rug rat.
