Gentlemen,
I’ve recently acquired a few Stanley number 39 dado planes. I’m looking for any tips or advice in regards to tuning these planes. In particular, what is the best method for sharpening the knickers and ensuring I get a perfect dado in regards to width. Thank you.

The best way is to send them to me and I'll fettle them into shape for ya, knickers included. Hell, I'll even road test 'em for ya.
There may be a problem getting them back to you though! :-)
Honing the knickers with fine sandpaper works for me. Holding on to 'em is the challange to me.

Bob,
Re your knicker problem: should you be overwhelmed by large numbers there is an easy way to hold onto them....
As for #39 nickers I think you can get a grip on them by making up a small threaded rod to use a handle-drill and tap the end to suit the screw that holds the nicker in place on the plane, attach the nicker to the rod with it and either hone or touch up the shape on a bench grinder. That is if you were to be faced with large numbers....Philip Marcou
I knew Bob had a nicker problem, but now you tell me he has a knickers problem, too? That man is hopeless. When they ask him, "Boxers or briefs?" he has to answer, "Other."

Steve,
I had almost come to the conclusion that I would switch to flannel boxers. Did you know that there is a nurse from Perth (*?-$a)%@( who's selling nickers on the WEB? She also enjoys going to the gym collecting coins.......... :-)
Google nickers and you'll find her.
