Need rust help.
I recently found a unique wood plane. The body is made of wood and is in fair condition. The metal blade is completely rusted but I believe it’s salvageable. Does anyone know a good non-destructive way to remove it?

"Does anyone know a good non-destructive way to remove it?" Yes! It's called Evapo-Rust and I first learned about it here at Knots from Len. It has recently become available in a 32 oz. size in AutoZone stores (it's been an industrial product mostly). It is not an acid and should not harm the plane blade in any way. Give me a few minutes and I'll find Len's post for you.

OK, found it -- click here. Len is no newbie to woodworking and restoring tools, so you can give his report serious consideration. Here's the web site for the company. The last link on the page is "How EvapoRust Works."
I bought a 5-gallon bucket of the stuff and will be doing some restoration of my own soon, and will post pictures.

I appreciate the information. Len's pictures were unbelievable. I'll try it out.
Thanks
5 gallons? I know it is moist up in your corner of the GNW, but I thought at the very least you had a roof over your head. I've got a pallet of left over shingles behind the wood pile, if you want 'em- they're yours. <G>Andy"It seemed like a good idea at the time"
I'm sharing it with a couple of friends. But, indeed, there are many rusty files and garden tools around. The stuff lasts forever (I think!) so I took advantage of a close-out from a local distributor.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
