Ridgid Spindle Sander Spindle Sizing
I am looking to buy a Ridgid Spindle Sander but would like to be able to use a 3/8 inch spindle. The sander comes with spindles down to 1/2 inch but that is not small enough for the work that I have planned.
Is it possible to put a 3/8 spindle on the Ridgid machine?

No you can't go smaller than 1/2" that is the size of the drive shaft and it can't be changed. What do you need such a small diameter sander for?

I have plans for a clock with wooden gears that require sanding. Actually getting down to 1/4 inch size would even be better.
Wood gears, to work well, need to have very precisely shaped teeth. Whatever technique you use to cut the teeth should leave the wood smooth enough that only a very light hand sanding to touch up the teeth would be needed. If you power sand the teeth you will change their profile which will lead to problems later on. John W.

Don,
One wooden clockmaker I've talked to uses ice files (for your fingernails) to refine the shape of the gears.Chris @ flairwoodworks
