I have a 1953 12″ DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. Great saw. Wolfe Rebuild. Very heavy. Very, very accurate. The only problem is that I would like to replace the motor with one that has an electric brake. I can go out for coffee and the thing still hasn’t stopped spinning 😉 (good bearings). Making multiple dados a long process.
It is true that using scrap wood to stop the blade is cheaper but safety and wear wise, it is not an option. Has anyone redone any motors for this machine or know of a source for replacement motors with brakes? It would need to fit in the same housing. I’m not concerned with the shorter life span of electric brake motors.
The current motor is 120/220 3.5hp at 17.5amps .
Thanks,
John

I asked them about a year ago and they didn't know about replacements but now they have auto breaks on their website so I'll give them a call with the serial numbers.
Thanks mucho!

Far cheaper to add a brake. When I was working for the dealer I put these on RAS in Vocational Schools. Around $500. It will cost more to switch the motor.

The Ambitech brake has to be adjusted carefully. An instant stop will spin the nut off!
Or trade up to a newer one. We have an 18" Dewalt with a brake. Typically the brakes are spring loaded and magnetic. When power is disconnected the magnet releases the spring. The tension has to be adjusted just right or too fast a stop causes the arbor nut to spin loose.
Thank you, I'll check it out.
