says : ” If you want that you will have to buy it for yourself. That’s boring.”
So
what was she talking about and why should you guys/gals/and I care ? Well I always care but I mean in the context of this FWW forum.
She was at the super market and noticed that she had not seen the particular Tools And Shops issue that she was looking at in our home. She thought she would buy it for me. Yes she is THEE sweetest, kindest, person in the world. To me and people who at least make and effort.
Anyway . . . being a bright cookie she picked up the magazine and paged through it. Then she started searching through it. She just told me all this. I just got home and am warming up the couch for the evening. So I figured now is a good time to put all this in type.
So . . . the reason she began to SEARCH the Tools And Shops was she was looking for any articles that looked interesting. ” Even the back cover ” she said.
Here is her take on what she found :
The whole thing just looked boring.
( Get this ) She said to her the bulk of the articles looked as if they were mostly written to make new people to the craft buy tools and stuff rather than be of interest to seasoned crafts people.
She finally gave up and put the rag . . . errr . . . I mean mag back on the shelf and walked off thinking ” If he wants that he will have to buy it for himself. That’s boring.”
Her words not mine.
If she thinks that, and she could care less about all this making messes with saw dust stuff, then how does it look to the Fine Woodworkers of the world ?
I didn’t buy it in December and I am not going to buy it now.
Maybe it is just me. Wait . . . it isn’t just me.
I wouldn’t have brought this up before when I looked at it back in December but I just had to after she did.

I think she's right. Magazines, or more accurately, editions of magazines like this are really aimed at folks who are new to the craft, and who haven't yet spent all of their money. Although they may serve to introduce new tools to experienced folks, too, there are probably better/cheaper ways for the "old" guys and gals to find out about the new stuff.
On the snide side, these "special" editions are also about making money through newsstand sales and advertising. This type of magazine offers up a very targeted demographic, so they are of interest to a broad range of manufacturers/advertisers. And, that's perfectly OK in my book. At least we don't have tabloids shouting from the grocery checkout line about Lie Neilsen's latest "affair" with a new steel. ;-)
