I don’t think your nuts. Well, maybe for wanting to teach, but that’s another kind of craziness.
In light of the fact that this is only short term, wouldn’t it be simpler to make leg extensions to raise the bed? Less material and lighter too.
Do I get a pass? Or did I fail to answer the question properly? 😉

Actually I understood that it's a complete bed minus the mattress and box spring. What I was trying to say was to make 4 small boxes (pyramids if you like) and set the bed on them, or attach leg extensions to the foot & headboards to raise it and leave the air mattress and plywood as is.
But 2x6, 8, or 10's screwed at the corners with the plywood on top will work as well. If you do choose to go that route add a couple more going across or down the length to better support the plywood. The extra strength might be appreciated if there is to be any "extra weight" occasionally (kids and the family dog). Round over the corners of the top with a router before upholstering. Maybe carpet instead of the batting and fabric? With a second look at the name you probably have the covering worked out already.
Didn't know (or care) that you're Blonde. You hairdresser can help with that if it's a problem for you though. ;-)
Allsewmom,
I have a platform instead of a box spring on my kingsize bed. I bought it about 20 years ago...so I really don't know how it is constructed. My advice would be to do your homework first: make verses buy, total overall weight. Personally, I'd try 3/8" ply on the top and sides with 1/4" ply eye beam type supports(4) going cross wise underneath....with cloth all over. I'm not sure that you can't buy something cheaper and lighter off the rack..
QC's initial suggestion(jacking up your Harvard frame) is a lot cheaper...but ya gotta watch the toes..DAMHIKT...
BG, friend that you are, would you mind 'splainin' to me what in the world is going on with this thread? I was quite interested, having just bought a "memory foam" mattress which will need a platform style set-up eventually. Hi FG,
I just got into this one because I am about ready to build a platform type bed into a new studio we are building with our garage. These deletes make no sense.
I didn't know how to register a question/complaint so I used their "report a violation" venue. We'll see if I even get a response. This is puzzling and frustrating. At least they could give us a small post as to why they are deleting somethiing.
Or, just get rid of the forum if that's the way they wish to play. I lived without it before I found it.

The moderators of Knots did not delete any posts from this thread. I suspect that the user deleted the account, which in turn removes all posts made with it.To reach us with technical questions email [email protected].Matt Berger

"I suspect that the user deleted the account, which in turn removes all posts made with it." Wow! Was it something we said?? Probably not. Might be someone who's leary about participating in forums and such and was being extraordinarily cautious about her internet activity.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG,
Well I'll be darned..I step away and half the thread gets deleted. She is a poor school teacher with an air mattress on a slab of 1/2" plywood on what I believe is a Harvard frame(king sized bed). She asked about building a platform type box spring so she's not so close to the ground.
I can't explain why the threads were deleted...
I had a memory foam type mattress for ten years...real love/hate releationship...feels great, can't sleep on anything else...sigh
I'm a bit curious as to what happened to the other half of the thread too. Had an email from her this morning thanking me for the carpet idea. I opened Knots this morning and there she was....gone.
Did she delete her own posts or did the moderators?
I can't imagine a reason the moderator would pull her posts. Maybe she thought she was being considerate and cleaning up after herself once her question was answered.------------------------------------

Q,
I agree with dgreen, I suspect she deleted her own posts. Perhaps there is something to that blonde thing she mentioned...lol
BG & dgreenI suspect that she deleted her own posts as well. I never saw #6 & #7 so that left a bit of room to wonder if something in there was cause for banishment. It's the cynical side of me I guess [it's a bald thing ;-)]. The moderators of this forum have always seemed to be, to me very fair and tolerant in the control they can exercise and I didn't intend a slight to them. I know the forum software is limited but it would be nice if there was some way that "Deleted" could be marked to say why. Maybe color coded. Blue for self deleted, green for moved to Cafe/Tavern, and red for breaking the rules.
The memory foam is hopefully my last attempt at finding a mattress that (a) works and (b) lasts. I'm so P.O.'d about the last mattress we bought, which had a 15 year warrantee, yet started sagging in less than 2 and has been just killing my back for many months now.
The Memory Foam one we got came from Costco and is a different company than the Swedish one, which was the original I believe. Took 3 days for it to completely expand to the full 12" depth. The first morning after switching to it, I woke up with absolutely no muscle spasms for the first time in ages!! I just hope it keeps returning to it's original shape month after month like they say it will.
Still have plenty of back pain to keep my attention -- degenerative disc disease -- but at least I look forward to going to bed at night again. Got to where I just dreaded it.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Fg,
I hope it continues to work for you, I loved mine but was forced to give it up when I began traveling more and found sleeping in hotels/motels a nightmare. Mine had a poly-ureathane(sp?)box spring, I do not know if that was important to the integrity of the mattress.
Strangly, I find planing wood helps my back...if i had all LN's i'd probably feel 20 years younger...lol

I forgot to stop at six pack and went all the way to quarter barrell abs.

Hi FG,
I considered a memory foam mattress, but was concerned that I would feel too warm in summer, being "encapsulated" from beneath in foam. Have you had time to notice any effect re: the foam's heat retention?
Thanks,-Jazzdogg-
