I’m building a glass full view front entry door, 6′ 8″ x 3′ 0″. The bottom rail will be 12″ wide.
I’m not too sure how I should be attaching it to the stiles.
My initial thought was to split the tenon on the rail into 2 or 3 separate tenons. But then I’m not so sure how they should be attached to the vertical members of the frame. Slathering glue all over the place would lock everything down and the rail wouldn’t be free to move.
Any suggestions?

With 3 tenons, glue the middle one, with 2, glue the lower. The unglued tenons will still give you some mechanical strength against twisting/warping, while allowing the 12" wide piece to expand and contract. Make the glued tenon wide enough to serve its purpose of holding the rail to the stiles.
Look up what is called a Fox Wedge joint / dove tail mortise joint. Several years ago I bought entry doors from a Company out of Santa Maria Calif. they in turn had the doors made in the Philippines using a wood called Nara Teak, which is a High Land wood. It was not FEQ teak. Anyway the would was more like Paduk.
To make a point here, the joint used a Mortise and Tenon and in the mortise tapered it on the top and bottom ( Vertical as if you are looking at the door) and the tenon has two saw cuts near the Top and bottom maybe 1/4". Then using a wedge made to fit the relief of the mortise. They would glue up the door applying the wedges to spread inside of the tenon relief and in the mortise locking the joints together.
Its a one time Gig so you have to get it right the first time. So I would make up a test sample to get the hang of it before you door the glue up with the door.
Good luck
Tony
