Ha ha, Boy, you are going to see that these danged computers have got minds of their own-it is necessary to talk nicely to them at all times. It is better to have a female one too.
Actually, I am sure Forestgirl, being our resident specialist, will solve the problem....
ALL , GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU,I'VE JUST READ DOWN ALL THE POSTS BEFORE I ANSWER ANY. YOU ARE ALL A TOWER OF STRENGHT IN MY HOURS OF NEED.
THE F'#C,.NG SORRY JUST A SLIP, THE NICE LITTLE MACHINE IS A DELL DIMENSION 3100 JUST OUT OF WARRENTY AND HAS PERFORMED WELL SINCE I GOT IT.WINDOWS XP HOME OF COURSE. Boysie, this ALL CAPS TYPING is a new thing for you. It's somewhat unpleasant for us (at least some of us), and in the cyberworld is considered SHOUTING. I know the computer has got you a bit riled up, but might you unlock your CAPS and go back to your earlier style of typing?
TIA! ("Thanks in advance")

FORESTGIRL, Forgive me I did'nt realise that the bloody thing was on until I went to sign in for email.I thought my eyesight was getting better, then it took me a half hour before I could access me email.
There was some strange words used before the penny dropped I am sorry and glad you told me this because I did not know, something new i've learnd.I've also found out that the monitor I am useing will not accept the Dell speakers I have I plugged them in and you'd think someone was murdering the cat. ####new 22" from Dell is costing me 350 euro which isabout $430.I may just take a course in Lip reading and save me few bob. Again sorry, if it happens again you know I will have meant it. Regds. Boysie Slan Leat .I'm never always right but i'm always never wrong. Boysie
Boysie, you're a kick! (That's a good thing). Best of luck, hope you can get your money back on your speakers.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Boysie,The following is based solely on results from some Googling; I don’t have the computer you have (mine is a Mac), so I don’t have a way to confirm it. That being said, if yours is a Dell Dimension 3100, it seems likely that the speakers that came with it are A215’s. They should have come with an owner’s manual showing how to set them up, but if you stuck the speakers in the drawer, there’s no telling where the manual is. I found an online copy of the manual (I’d include the link, but the printing is barely readable). It shows the left side speaker with its brown plug connecting to the brown jack at the back of the right side speaker. The right side speaker has a green plug, which plugs into the green sound-card connector jack at the computer. On the 3100, that’s located at the back, about halfway up. Finally, the power adapter plugs into the other jack at the back of the right side speaker. The only troubleshooting information they included consists of ensuring that you have power, that the green light is on, that the connections are correct, and verifying the volume settings by going to Settings-Control Panel, and clicking on Sounds and Audio Devices. I can’t tell you what to do after you get to that point, that would be more for someone like Forestgirl or Kidderville Bob.If you can’t get the speakers to work, you should at least be able to listen to the sound by plugging a set of earphones (Walkman, iPod, etc.) into the headphone connector at the front of the computer. I generally end up using the earphones more than I do the speakers anyway, especially when I’m up late.Regards, and good luck,
Dan
Dan, Your a hive of imformation, you are of course right about the manual, Go d knows where it is. Your idea about the ear phones maybe the answer,I will round up a set and give it a try.As you say,it would be better for me as it's very late over here when you good people are about so the GOOD LADY can sleep away and I can listen to me hearts content,Thanks again for your help Regds. Huh? Did you perhaps stop in for a jar on your way home?
That is not good....I think I am correct in saying that Boysie is new to computers and recently attended or will attend , some classes on the basics.Having been in the same boat myself I can understand the panic when things don't work properly-example: when using Incredimail recently the keys became scrambled i.e type q but e appears etc-how come? Computer tech could not fix it-said he had never heard or seen this. But the key board worked properly using Outlook Express. The problem lasted two days-then overnight returned to normal....Who can explain?Philip Marcou

That one's not so bad, When I was still gainfully employed, all our computers came from Finland. We ran into the "scrambled keyboard" syndrome all the time. I believe the swapped "q & e" are from the French keyboard. It probably took a couple of restarts for the Incredimail software to recognize the your "different country" keyboard.
boysie,
If you have a sound card it may have been accidentally been unplugged from the speakers? The tinny sound could be coming from the PCs built-in speaker.
Also, have there been any changes to your sound/speaker system recently?
Assuming Windows XP, if you go into Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager, are there any yellow ! marks?
As the old saying goes in computer networking, most problems reside at the physical layer, i.e. connections.

Bob @ Kidderville Acres
P.S. philip is referring to male/female connections, right philip?

Boysie, is this a new problem (e.g., the sound was fine, but now is awful) or are you using a new computer and the sound is bad from the get-go????
It would help to know your computer make, and operating system i.e. windows xp etc, and is this a new problem. First rule is also to check your connections. I assume you have speakers extrernal to the computer and your are not just using your built in speaker which ain't much. Also, have you recently placed any electric device next to the speakers like a florecent light. Check the cables are still in good, and if that aint it give me some details and I'll try to help ya. You can e-mail me on my profile if you wish. Take care.
