At about this time of the year, for the past several years I have found small clusters of black dots about 1/2mm in diameter on some of my work and on some lumber in my shop.
Quite annoying especially considering that these stains went quite deeply into the wood and were somewhat difficult to remove.
Fly poop, nasty stuff, got to find some of that sticky paper ! That’s going to be some Christmas decoration for my shop !

It leached down into the wood?

Imagine a cluster of a dozen or more black dots in less than 1/2" diameter, like if somebody did it using a fine Sharpie, it goes as deep into the wood as the Sharpie's ink would go !

Half of a millimeter or half of an inch? You used both units.

The dots are 0.5mm in diameter, spread roughly on a circle about 14mm in diameter, (that's where the 1/2" was mentioned)C.
Sound like it might be a fungus or mold???
Nope, no moldor fungus, plain old fly #### !C.
spider droppings.......
I second your opinion, the spots are typically caused by spiders that come indoors to find a warm home for the winter. I try to chase them off to someplace that they won't cause problems, I don't have the heart to kill them.

Are you sure it's not mouse pee. I'am starting to have problems not that the weather is going polar. Sprinkle some fine sanding dust and check for tracks.

I'll bet that it's either fly or spider "specks".
Ah Hah! I have the same nuisance and since I live next to a farmer's field, it is all over the outside of my house as well! (think fresh manure... attracts flies)It is a real pain to clean off, if you find some in your house try one of those "magic erasers" seems to work best for me.Jeff
C,
You need my cat, Korky. He eats mice, flies and spiders and never deposits the "processed" results anywhere near my shed or timber store.
I believe Korky would eat me, should I scamper away in the correct fashion and he was even hungrier than usual. I suspect his dad was an escaped panther, who happened to pass through the garden when the local Queen #### was making those "Come on Boys!" noises.
