Removing shellac pre-finish in joints before glue up
Hi, turns out my blue tape didn’t block the shellac as well as I thought it would during pre-finish. A little crept into the edges of my double rabbet joints for a small bookshelf. Questions for any experienced, kind folks here:
1. How much would you bother to remove 1-2mm of shellac seeping into the edges of a 8-10mm double rabbet joint? I am planning to use hide glue, in case it matters.
2. If you suggest removing it, what would you suggest? The joints are tight fitting and self aligning so I don’t want to risk aggressive sanding messing with the fit.
Thoughts? Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.
Thanks,
Phil

I would simply scrape off anything that is on the joint surface and not worry about any shellac that has penetrated the pores of the wood. You could try washing any residue with alcohol, but you could also cause problems on the finished surface.
