We’re buying a 150-year old house. The trim is all heartwood pine, and there are a couple missing pieces. I’d like to try to match them.
It’s just some baseboard and quarter-round, so it’s not like I need a perfect match. This is not furniture. It’s not even “obvious” trim like window casing.
I’m wondering if you could suggest a species that I could stain to match the rich orange-brown color of the ancient pine.
I guess I could just use any species, but I want to try at least a little!

You can get genuine heart pine from

Bill,
Probably not available in your area, but southern yellow pine with some amber/reddish stain might get you by.
Also a very good match would be vertical grain douglas fir. A lot of those pines that the heart pine came from were tremendous, and yielded quite a bit of quartersawn material. The darker stripes in the fir are a little smaller (thinner) than in heart pine but if you find some nice pink/red stock it should pass nicely for the pine.

Good luck,

I used to have a house with heart pine trim and floors. Although I was able to match the color by making a home brew of stain, it never looked right because the grain in the heart pine was different than anything else. Yellow pine was close, but since the winter wood doesn't absorb much if any stain it never looked right. I ultimately found a place that sold reclaimed heart pine and I'm glad I went that route.
I loved that house and the heart pine trim, I'm jealous........
If you can't buy a good match you might be able to "steal" some from inside one of the closets.
