I’ve been asked to build kitchen cabinets for a client, who wants maple…I generally use cherry. Plans call for flat panel construction of doors and end panels. Rails and stiles will be solid maple, but what about the panels? Can I use 1/2″ maple veneer plywood from Lowes ($32 per sheet), or should I glue up solid panels? I prefer plywood…it’s more stable and less expensive, but will it look OK with a finish of Danish oil and varnish (no stain). If Lowes is not a good source, where might you suggest getting a better quality alternative? I seem to recall seeing apost on this topic but cannot locate it…
Thanks!

There's gotta be a local lumberyard somewhere near you in PA. If all else fails, the big box stores usually carry 3/4 birch ply, very similar to maple.
I normally use 3/4" birch ply for carcases, but these don't show. I'm curious whether maple plywood panels will look ok with solid frames. I guess I could try it out...
Good quality cabinet grade plywoods have much better veneers on them than the stuff you'll get at Loew's or Home Depot.
A good veneer would be almost indistinguishable from solid wood, but you'll pay $20.00 to $40.00 more for the panels. Even at that price it is usually cost effective compared to gluing up solid stock.

You should find a commercial plywood supplier that serves your area. They'll have a dozen choices for maple faced plywood, all of which will probably be of better quality than what you will get at Loew's. The commercial stuff will probably cost more, but it wiil be of reliable quality and finish without surprises.

I don't know where you are, but you can look at their site and get a good idea of what's easily available.
