I’m just about ready to install aromatic cedar in a hope chest I’m making and I’ve been told you don’t want to attach it really tight. I’ve also been told there are special colored nails you can use. Has anyone been successful in installing this type of cedar in a chest and if so how did you attach it and is it holding up ok?
Thanks

I made a blanket chest last winter for the lady of the house, I shiplapped the edges of the cedar then just placed it in the bottom of the chest, made it to fit tight, it can't go anywhere unless you tip the chest over upside down. If your worried about them moving put a few brads in them, they would pull out easy later. I haven't heard any complaints so it must be working ok.

Thanks for the info!

Your welcome, hopefully it was some help.

I made a cedar chest for my niece a couple years back and the bottom of the chest had the cedar build into the frame. For the interior sides(1/4") I placed the long sides in tight with a dolop of silocone sealant to hold in place and then the ends were fit in tight just inside the longs sides to hold them in place. I put 4 stainless counter sunk screws in the corners of the sides and its held perfect. There are many ways to do it thats just one.

Thanks for the info it's a great help!

I built a chest for my brother and sister-in-law a few years ago and used cedar in the panels dividing the chest section from the drawer section below. The cedar pieces are loose (as in not glued) in the frame and as of yet have given no trouble.

-pjw I really like the chest you made, here are a couple of pic's of the one I built, as I said in a previous post I just set the cedar in the bottom.
Mike
it looks as though we made the same chest (if you look past the differences in finish).

That's what I thought when I seen the Picture of yours. You obviously have very good taste ha ha.

You know what they say - Great minds think alike lol

Thanks for the reply! You made a great looking chest.

thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Bruce,
I've been told you don't want to attach it really tight
Hmmmmmm, sounds like a frame & panel assembly might be just the ticket. You could glue up cedar panels that sit inside frames constructed from the primary wood, either flat or raised.

With the chests that I build I line both bottoms and sides with 1/4" thick tongue and groove cedar. The long front and back I use a little glue and one fine finish nail in the ends. On the ends I glue just the center of the board and use finish nails on each end. The bottom is glued and the sides and front and back boards hold the bottom in place. The nail are set and the holes covered with "cedar" plastic wood and sanded smooth. Almost invisible when done proper;ly.
Thanks - that helps a lot!

Malloryjb,
There are a lot of ways to approach this issue, at the moment I am in the process of building a blanket chest in my shop. It is partially finished at the moment. Decided to do rail and stile sides on the chest with raised panels; which are aromatic cedar. Plus I plan to put a solid cedar bottom in the chest. The corners are box joints with the front and back extending through the joint like you see on a Greene and Greene design.
It will have the ebony plugs and the top will have breadboard ends.
The frames are pink lyptus.

I like it! That is going to look fantastic when its finished, it all ready does, make sure to post some pic's when you get finished.

Thanks - I like it a lot!

Looks nice, Moksha. But, won't this approach also fill the room/house with the aroma of the cedar, too, instead of restricting the aroma to the interior of the chest?
Ralph,After four coats of polyurethane on the outside of the blanket chest the aroma will be subdued. The frame inside the chest will also get coated with the floor and the raised panels left open. Moksha
