WTB some Bermuda cedar (juniperus bermudiana) for making a humidor-sized jewelry box. If any of you have some or know of a source could you post an answer herein? I recently retuned from a trip there and was stunned by the this handsome wood and the extensive amount of it that has been used there for entry doors, trim, and furnishings. I understand that the species was largely wiped out by a foreign blight during the 1960’s. There surely must be some old logs and reclaimed wood around somewhere.

I doubt that you will find any Bermuda cedar lumber for sale. The blight was caused by scale insects in the 1940's. Over 75,000 trees were cut at that time and stock piled. Bermudans can get some of this but only in small pieces. Bermuda was one of the first countries to start conservation efforts somewhere back in the 1600's. The current crop of juniperous bermundiana is listed as endangered. You might look into Virginia cedar as an alternative.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thanks, Hammer. I expected that answer. I wonder if Virginia cedar is even close in appeal to the Bermuda. I'll check it out.

Bermuda Cedar still around?????

I know that it is highly unlikely that you still have this but it is worth a try. If you happen to have any of this, I need something that will be used to make a ring.
I estimate the size to be 1.5" square by 3 or 4". or anything that I may be able to glue onto and turn.
Please let me know if this is possible.
Thank you.
Bob
hey!
i know it has been a while since anyone has commented on this thread, but i was wondering if you still had any pieces? i am trying to make custom chess pieces with the bermudan cedar as the person i am with is bermudian. he doesn’t get to see the island much so i wanted to be able to give him a piece of it wherever he goes. (he adores chess to the moon and back and it makes a great birthday gift)

Hey there Martin. Are you in Bermuda now? I lived there when I was growing up and would definitely be interested in finding some more cedar. I live in California now. I just came across a 40lb box of 7" cedar logs out of storage from when I was there in the late 1980's. I plan on making things and giving them to family/friends. Anyways, if you have any photos of the cedar that would be cool. Thanks!
Martin - would you be willing to sell a small piece ...? I live in CA and am looking for 1 piece between 6x6 and 12x12 ... thanks.

i was wondering (even though this is an old thread) if you still have any pieces left available. my bf is obsessed with chess and so for his birthday i was hoping to try and get him something that he loves and also reminds him of his homeland(bermuda)!
Hey there! My name is Aaron and I lived in Bermuda 30 years ago. I came across a 40lb box of cedar logs that have been sitting in storage. It smells AMAZING and I'm super excited to make things out of it. You mentioned you wanted some smaller pieces to make some chess pieces out of, and that you live in California. I live in Los Angeles and would be willing to sell you some if you still need.
Hey!!
I’m so surprised someone got back to me haha thank you!! I’m looking to make chess pieces for my current partner as he grew up in bermuda and is obsessed with chess. I thought it would be a nice homage! If you still have any available I’d really appreciate to obtain it!!
Hey 808woods,
Do you still have any of this? My mother is Bermudian and I'm Australian born. Would be great to gift her something out if for her 80th...
Yes indeed! I have 4/4, 8/4 boards as well as bowl blanks at the moment. Material can be cut down to USPS flat-rate box sizes if need be, just let me know what you are thinking!
Hi there. So you have Bermuda Cedar that was grown in Bermuda? I'd be interested in a fed-ex box of that... : )
This looks identical to the southern red cedar that grows in Florida!!
Juniperus silicicola.
808woods, what's the best way to contact you about this?
