Greetings! I’m looking for Valentine’s Day gift ideas for my sweetheart. As corny as it may be, something in a heart shape seems like it would serve well.
I’ll be happy if it serves some purpose but that’s not really important.
So what have you done that was well received?

I made small carved hearts one year: they had a flat back and a magnet embedded inside. There's one stuck on the fridge still.
I made a small box using "lovetails" last year. It's more ambitious, but it should be well received.
Thanks. Right after I wrote that first post an idea came to me.... some heart shaped 4/4 oak coasters with a round insets. Bed-side kind of deal.
I gave her a small dovetailed box last year, with a ring in it. It was well received.

I made my wife and others I,ve sold a heart shaped box off the bandsaw. A bandsaw box.
Determined the size of your box make a patteren trace it on a piece of wood about 2and one half inches thick. Then cut the bottom off sliced at 1/4 in. slice off the top at 1/2 in. or thicker if you want to carve the top. Cut out the middle on the bandsaw the sides should be 1/4 in. thick.Start your cut with the grain because you will be glueing it back together here. Now glue back together after the midlle is removed, also you need to sand the inside smooth ,after the glue is set put the top side of the box on a piece of paper and trace the shape. Cut a scrape piece of wood 1/8 in thick the same as the inside of the box the same size of the piece that you just traced.Temprarly clamp the top to the box and trace the inside of the box to the lid. This is where you glue the piece of 1/8 in.to the lid(inside of lid)Now glue on bottom, after glue is set up top on and file and sand top and bottom and the box all together.Put on what ever top coat you want,I use a spray laquer quick drying finish. Line the inside with felt and put some felt feet on bottom and date and sign your name and your done.
Also you talk about making coasters. Make some using marble or granit. You can get marble or granit at any home hardware store you only need it to be 3/8 in. thick and only buy 2 or 3. Cut them into 3 in. squares with a dry diamond blade. enlay them in the wood of your chioce .I used 3/4 in. materail mine where round but you could make heart shaped ones instead.
I came up with the coaster edea myself but the haert shapped boxes I saw them in WOOD JOURNAL a long time ago. ALso heart shapped ear rings and a mirror .
