I want to make a raised panel for a door out of a walnut veneered piece of 3/4″ or 1/2″mdf. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to finish the routed “raised” part that shows the mdf? I see it done on mdf furniture in the furniture stores where the raised part looks like it is painted or stained black and the veneer portion is finished like a piece of walnut.

Howard,
They use glazes and junk (sometimes junk veneer under layment but usually just paste fillers and glaze) but better technique is to veneer in matching walnut and miter the strips at corners... not hard but using real wood for all is better :)

Edit: top and bottom will be vertical grain but anything is better than furniture store stuff. Reeeel careful on final sanding.
