I purchased a large Claro Walnut slab and then resawed it down the middle. There is a large crack with beautifully “spalted” wood surrounding it. The black wood could easily fall out. I want to keep in in it’s place. I have heard of using epoxy for this but don’t know what kind. Also, is there a dark epoxy to match the surrounding wood?

System 3, or West Systems will do the trick. I use System 3 structural epoxy. It's available at Woodcraft, or online at a billion more places.

Take a look at Smith and Co. products as well they have epoxys that you can ad powdered pigments (that they sell) that work pretty well.

thanks so much.
I use West System epoxy for applications like that. The hardener gets fairly dark with some age and I find between that and the fact that it takes on the color of the wood around it, that no pigment is needed. If the crack goes all the way through, it might let enough light through to be a give away.
PS..... When I've filled cracks like that, I usually tape the underside if it can leak out and just pour the epoxy in from the top side. As it gets absorbed, you need to keep adding more to keep it full. Overfill it a little so there's enough to sand it flush later.
