My Small 12″ 2 speed delta planer has recently developed a couple problems and i’m curious is anyone else has seen this.
1) the slow feed rate doesn’t seem to engage — i can’t get the lever to quite go all the way over
2) my bigger issue – oftentimes, typically on the initial pass, the planer wants to bite into the wood upon entering. Usually this happens most often when the planer is not adjusted quite as low as it maybe should be. so when i feed the board in, it’ll almost want to kick it back, make an indentations out of the initial 4″ and then continue on through w/o taking off any wood.
The planer’s been used really hard lately — having to push some really big (12″ x 6″ x 8′) posts through and i’m sure that’s the root cause but before i start taking things apart id like to know if anyone else has seen something like this.
Thanks,
Bob

Sounds like some crud has got into the drive system. take the covers off and give it a good clean out.
Thanks...will do.
"...so when i feed the board in, it'll almost want to kick it back, make an indentations out of the initial 4" and then continue on through w/o taking off any wood. " What kind of infeed support are you using??
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
just the fold down infeed table that's included. The thing is, my method of support, feed, etc hasn't changed over the past year...just the behavior of the planer.
You should also check the blade edge. Blunt blades effect these planners. blunt blades will try and kick back, might feed without cutting etc. With the heavy use you have had with it I would also check this.
Bob,
I have a Dewalt 12 inch and when I was working with some Southern yellow pine the drive rollers coth covered with chips and would not feed oak or cherry. I used mineral spirits to clean them and after cleanup, worked fine.
Hope this helps,
Greg
Problem #2 may be minimized by applying upward pressure on the tail end of the board upon entry.
