I need to drill in a very tight space. I have the 90 degree attachment but it only accepts 1/4 inch shank bits and the bit I must use has a 3/8 shank. I have tried to find an adapter without success. Perhaps I am not naming it correctly in the search engine. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Bill

I searched on "drill chuck for impact driver" and found several that might work on Amazon. They have the 1/4 in. hex impact shank and will extend the total length of your bit. Depending on the bit diameter you are trying to use you might be able to find one with a 1/4 in. shank and use it without an adapter. I found 1/2 in. and 3/8 in bits with 1/4 in shanks on Amazon.
thanks dstevick. I had looked at those. Unfortunately the only ones I saw that would take a 3/8 shank are too bulky for the space. My bad really--poor planning. I'll check to see if I can find a narrow shank bit.
Do you have a bench grinder ?
yes
Then you can either grind the shank down or cut the drill bit back and sharpen it so it can go in an adapter and be short enough to get in the cramped space.
Could also buy a drill with a 1/4 inch shank https://www.amazon.ca/JEFE-HEX-Titanium-Aluminum-Plastics/dp/B091B1Y4C5/ref=asc_df_B091B1Y4C5/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=560376348675&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7280927291100219590&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000565&hvtargid=pla-1376248832803&psc=1
Thank you gulfstar. The bit called for is 13/32 (for a cross dowel) and the only thing close that I see with a 1/4 shank is 3/8. But I may be able to make that work. If not I'll try grinding it down. Thanks again for your advice.
When I need an odd size hole I grind a spade drill down to final size. In this case that would be a 7/16 drill. I grind each side the same number of time and do test holes until satisfied with the size and quality.
Not sure what your hole tolerance is but found on Amazon a 10 mm drill bit with a 1/4 inch hex shaft
Thanks. Might be a tad small, but worth the try.
