I’m not posting this to brag, but simply to share my news with someone other than my wife who doesn’t truly appreciate my find.
I half-heartedly replied to a craigslist ad for “wood for sale – locust and poplar- $150”. I needed some black locust for some oudoor furniture I’m getting ready to build. I know from experience though that people who place wood for sale ads usually think they have a gold mine when they are getting rid of crummy lumber they have collected over the years.
I went to look and found, in order of quantities, birch, white ash, soft maple, sycamore, black walnut, cherry, and black locust. There was a total of 1750-2000 bf all together. The funny thing was there was no poplar and very little black locust. Most of it is 8/4. The birch is spectacular and is 10″-15″ wide and 18′ long. I paid the $150 and loaded the first of the many trips it would take to haul it all. The guy that was selling it had a father that cut the wood 20 yrs. ago and it had sat in their barn since. On the second trip to haul more, my conscience got the best of me and I told the guy it was worth more, but he just wanted it gone.
One of the best parts is that on my fourth trip picking up the wood, the guy had a FREE sign next to a mini fridge in his yard. Now I can have a cold one after I’m done working for the day.

That's like a dream they would publish in the Forum section of a Woodworkers porno mag.
Congrats.
Or as 14 y.o. Forum readers always say: "How come nothing like this ever happens to me??"
Good deal, glad craigslist worked for you. As the announcer says, 'Your mileage may vary'.
I haven't had such good luck, went on one 130 mile wild goose chase for some 12 - 14" wide cherry, the seller sounded quite legitimate and quite admit that he had quality stuff. Jeez, the cherry I found wasn't even good enough for a bonfire..
I've gotten a couple of good deals on tools on craigslist but nothing like that! That's a find of a lifetime
"I'm not posting this to brag, but simply to share my news with someone other than my wife who doesn't truly appreciate my find."
How is that different from bragging? ;-)
Since that's far too much wood for you to use, I would be happy to take some off your hands. No charge.

I've gotten some good deals on CL, and have sold a few items too. No real issues to speak of, but not everyone is very good about getting back to you in a timely fashion, which is not really a CL issue....darn humans!
I went to look at a General 350 a few weeks ago. The guy was asking $1200. When I showed up I discovered he was also inclduing an Excalibur sliding table, a bunch of CMT blades (including a dado blade), and some other accesories.
The saw was about 6 years old and in good shape. He had removed the door and cut some of the cabinet to add dust collection, and the fence had been cut down to accomodate the sliding table.
He had a bunch of other tools as well, including a $5000 drum sander for $1000...
It was a great deal, but I decided to pass it on to one of my buddies. My shop probably could not accomodate the longer fence and sliding table, and even at $1200 was probably not enough of an upgrade over my current GI 220.
Now I can have a cold one after I'm done working for the day.
I would arrive.. And ask for 'Is it OK to talk to your wife. If he says YES! I tell her your husband is a NUT! She responds.. I know, but I love him anyway!
THATS ALMOST I SAID ALMOST LIKE FINDING A 1970 HEMI CUDA CONVERTABLE IN AN OLD BARN AND THE GUY JUST WANTS $1000.00 FOR IT. GOOD JOB
Yep. Craigs List is like panning for gold -- lots of sludge, but occasionally a big nugget. I once found a guy who was closing up his cabinet shop about 20 miles from me. Most of the big stuff and all the chisels had been sold. However, I did pick an LN #4, an LN chisel Plane, an LN Large Scraping Plane, an unusual sharpener/edge turner for hand scrapers, and a 72 inch Jorgensen bar clamp -- all for $225.00. The bar clamp was rusty, the #4 showed signe of a fair amount of competent use, and all else was like new.

I'm such a hoarding little wood fiend it's almost pathetic. Some guys really like their tools. I really like wood. When I moved my shop from <!----><!---->Western Kansas<!----> to Upstate New York, I sold all my equipment but moved most of my wood. The wood I did not bring with me, I still think about and wish I had it. So this find was some sort of sick fulfillment to my sad little world.
